They are everywhere in my neighbour. Mrs. Fox, don’t you have hungry cubs to feed?
Wednesday morning July 15th, the day after the torrential downpour…
I had cleared my deck of all debris. I put on my gloves and decided to scout my side yard for any fallen branches. Just than, I heard my neighbor yelling my name.
“Gawri, come here.” I dropped the sticks and twigs I had picked up on the lawn and crossed the street. At the same time I saw my neighbor pointing to something and talking to a jogger in front of her house.
“What’s happening?” I asked in excitement.
“There’s a baby cottontail on the stairs. He’s not moving. I thought I’d call you because you’d know what to do.”
Since I had my gardening gloves on I picked the wee little thing up and started to check him. It was a first for me. I’ve never held a wild bunny in my hands before.
I’m sure it was a first for the bunny too.
“I’ll take him back home and call Animal Control, I said. I’ll show the kids and it’ll also wake them up. They are still in bed at almost noon. What can I say, summer holidays …
I’ll come with you said my neighbor as she followed me back to my place. We got a box from my garden and placed the bunny in it.
We called Animal Control and guess what? They were so busy that they told us to leave the cottontail where we found it or to call the Humane Society.
After fussing about we finally got the phone number from the Internet.
I can’t even remember the number of times I’ve called animal control to save an injured skunk on the street, a bleeding swan in the lake, raccoon with a mangled leg, raccoon with distemper, runaway dogs and now for a baby cottontail.
It turns out that Animal Control was too busy attending to other calls. Welcome to Oakville.
Both Humane Society and Animal Control numbers are saved in my phones now.
So, away the baby bunny went in the palm of son’s hand back to my neighbour’s house. His job was to check on the bunny. Sure enough, after an hour or so the bunny had hopped way.
The ones below are frequent flyers in my yard. They come for the apples which are left behind by the squirrels.
And soon after this same neighbor sent in this charming video.
