Soak the avocado pit in water for one week. Change the water everyday.
At the end of the seven days get three toothpicks and pierce the avocado pit in three places.
Pay attention to the bottom and the top of the avocado. The bottom will look like below.
Place the avocado in the water. The bottom should be in the water.
Leave it in a sunny spot. Nothing will happen to it for about two to three months.
However, do top up the water. Which is why it is good to start this project in winter. I started mine in December.
Sometime in between the two to three months the roots will emerge first. It will take forever for the first leaves to appear.
Today as it looks now, it has sprung the first new leaves.
In spring when the temperatures are in the teens
transfer the entire avocado seedling into a pot of soil and soak the pot in water.
Don’t leave the plant out in the cold. But keep soaking the pot full of water.
Climatize the plant to the summer heat gradually
This is great baby project for children. They tend to forget about the avocado in the growing process, even giving up on it until the actually see the leaves emerge after a few months. And what do you know? It’s spring.
Below is the avocado plant from last summer.
Just before the kids head back to school the avocado plant has to be moved indoors. Have fun.
