Our pup came down with yeast infection in his ears. We visited our vet and he confirmed that it was indeed yeast infection and not ear mites. Nico my pup is a Golden Labrador – half Lab and half Retriever hybrid.
… And as such he takes the traits of a Retriever when it comes to ear infection and temperament. If you see something like coffee grounds in the ears and they have a foul smell, it’s a yeast infection.
This is how his ears looked liked.
Imagine my surprise when I saw black stuff, and awful odour coming out of his ears.
I bought a cleaner for $9 from the vet that I was supposed to use once every two days to clean out his ears. I noticed that it wasn’t working so off I went to do some research.
After hours of reading on the Internet and books from the library this is what I did.
I kept a log and I am ready to share my findings. I would also like to thank everyone who posted their experience with ACV.
Nico has squeaky clean ears that smells wonderful.
This is his clean ears. The best thing about a Lab is their velvety ears.
First seven days
- Jan 6th -1/3 Hydrogen peroxide 3% + 1/3 alcohol +1/3 white vinegar
- Jan 7th – 1/3 Hydrogen peroxide 3% + 1/3 alcohol +1/3 white vinegar
- Jan 8th – 1/3 Hydrogen peroxide 3% + 1/3 alcohol +1/3 white vinegar
After three days the infection was less but not completely gone. I was still cleaning with ten to twelve cotton balls for each ear.
At this point I decided to switch to apple cider vinegar(ACV)
- Jan9th – 1/3 Hydrogen peroxide 3% + 1/3 alcohol + 1/3 apple cider vinegar
- Jan 10th – 1/3 Hydrogen peroxide 3% + 1/3 alcohol +1/3 apple cider vinegar
- Jan 11th– 1/3 Hydrogen peroxide 3% + 1/3 alcohol +1/3 apple cider vinegar
- Jan 12th– 1/3 Hydrogen peroxide 3% + 1/3 alcohol +1/3 apple cider vinegar
Four days of switching to ACV did the trick. I was impressed at how fast and effectively ACV worked on my pup’s ears. I was a little apprehensive at first which is why I used white vinegar.
I cleaned the outside of his ears with witch hazel and applied coconut oil. I must admit that he was smelling like salad dressing.
I didn’t want to take any chances and started a new seven-day regime immediately with 50/50 ACV and warm water.
Second seven days
Jan 13th-Jan 19th.
I did this religiously twice a day for seven days continuously.
I could have stopped after the first three days because his ears were clean by now, however I decided to run the course for the entire seven days. And I’m glad I did it.
Third seven days
From Jan 20th -27th – taking extra precautions I used Zymox once a day for seven days.
Refrain from any sort of cleaning using any other method of cleaning while using Zymox. Zymox takes care of the infections and the cleaning.
For the past few days his ears have been clear and they smell like roses.
I’m so glad ACV worked and we saved a whole lot of money.
I’m keeping an eye “in” his ears and check them regularly. I’ll clean them once a week with ACV and warm water to be proactive.
I hope this has been helpful and if you try it on your dogs please let me know the results.
